The Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Education & Human Development at the University of North Dakota (UND) have received a 3-year grant from the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction to offer high-quality professional development opportunities that emphasize content knowledge to selected math and science teachers at no cost to participants.
On-campus summer courses, online courses, and graduate certificate programs will be available in:
Biology (HS)
Chemistry (HS)
Mathematics (MS)
Science & Engineering (6-9)
Physics (HS)
Teachers will earn graduate credits upon successful completion of a course. Each course is designed to enrich participants’ subject content knowledge and pedagogy.
A major goal of this project is to cultivate lasting professional partnerships between participating teachers and a group of highly-qualified UND faculty (see below for Faculty Partners). These partnerships and above mentioned professional development opportunities should help improve math and science literacy of our state’s youth.
An important goal of Project ScEnMaT is for participating 6-12 teachers and UND faculty to form lasting professional partnerships. Faculty and teachers will meet regularly via online conferences and faculty will visit teachers at their schools. We hope that these partnerships will benefit all parties involved.
Summer Courses:* A two-week summer course in each subject area will be
offered at UND every June starting 2007. A participant will earn 2 graduate credits upon
successful completion of a summer course.
Online Courses:* A teacher completing a summer workshop may enroll in
the related 3-credit online course that will be offered during the following academic year.
Combined summer workshop and related online course will be a single 5-credit graduate-level course. Online courses will be delivered primarily via high-quality streaming audio-visual media. In addition, participants will communicate regularly with UND faculty using web-conferencing tool BREEZE®. In addition, UND faculty will visit teachers at their schools.
Graduate Certificate Programs:* A teacher earning 15 graduate credits
by completing a 3-year sequence of three 5-credit courses in a certain subject area will earn a
Graduate Certificate. We are working to make sure that a teacher earning a certificate will be
eligible for NDESPB certification to teach in the relevant subject area. This program is intended
for teachers looking to further advance their careers by qualifying to teach in a second subject
area.
* We are in the process of getting
University and State Board of Higher Education approval for these new courses and certificate
programs. The format of courses may vary from one subject area
to another. Details will be posted on the project website in the near future.
Only licensed North Dakota teachers are eligible to benefit from this project. Teachers from LEAs identified as “high-need” by NDPI will receive priority consideration. Letters of support from school/district administrators are required. Some commitments from schools/districts in the form of computer/ internet access for online course etc. may be needed.
The project will cover for eligible participants the cost of tuition, textbooks, and food, lodging (UND housing & meal plan) & travel expenses related to summer workshops. In addition, a stipend of $750 will be paid to summer workshop participants.
Please complete and submit the
online ScEnMaTapplication. Make sure that you make arrangements to send the
required letters of recommendation. Once the application is submitted, we will contact
you within a week.
Note: This application is for admission to ScEnMaT program
which will cover participants' costs as described above. If selected as a ScEnMaT
participant, you will be instructed to apply for admission to UND's Graduate School.
